Dino J Velez

Dino John Velez was born on October 22, 1969 in Brooklyn NY. He was the son of Hector Velez and the late Isabel (Bita) Rivera Velez, brother of Luz Virginia Velez and Tiana Tejada. In 1989 he began a relationship with Bernadette Varona. From their common-law union they bore three beautiful children, Michelle, Justin and Briana. They would later separate and in 2007 Dino found his soul-mate, Lourdes Sanchez. She brought to their union two beautiful children that he l9oved as much as his own, Justin Daniely and Maria Martinez. As a child, Dino was loving, carefree and fearless. He marched to the beat of his own drum. He would make up his own words for example: he called Tuna fish "Kiki" and cereal was "Fifi". He was so spoiled, he was always crying and whining "I want fifi NOW!! His fascination with super heroes started at a very young age. As a toddler he love Superman. He would run around the house using a blanket as a cape calling himself Fifiman! One day he tied the blanket around his neck and attempted to jump out the window while declaring "I AM FIFIMAN!". Thankfully, his mom was there to swoop her arm around his belly and pull him back inside just in time. she was his first hero in many ways and she adored him. After his mom shared the story with her sisters, Titi Carmen adopted the nickname "Fifi Man". which she lovingly called him until her passing last June. Dino had a difficult life however through it all, he kept a positive outlook. He enjoyed spending time with his family and in his younger years, clubbing with his friends. One night, he went to the "Fun"House" in the city, there was an unprovoked altercation and Dino was stabbed. He had another hero in his life that day; his best friend Brian. who called for help and stood by his side the entire time. Dino w3as also a great cook and a master on the grill. Every year he would volunteer to man the grills at the family reunions. They will not be the same without him. Dino will be remembered most for his love, strength, courage and quiet reserve. He battles cancer aggressively, participating in clinical trials and multiple rounds of chemo-therapy. He fought a fine fight. He was a loving son, brother, soulmate, father, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He always put his family first and work3ed hard to provide for his children. Despite his many struggles, he always managed to keep a smile on his face and be kind to everyone he encountered. Dino, we will miss you so much. Our only comfort is knowing that you are no longer suffering. You have gone home to join our ever increasing family of angels watching over us. We know that we will see you again someday. On May 6, 2016 at 2:18 am our valiant hero, Dino John Velez lost his battle with cancer. He leaves behind to cherish his loving memory his father - Hector Velez; his soulmate- Lourdes Sanchez; five children/step-children - Michelle, Justin, Briana, Justin D. and Maria; and two sisters - Virginia and Tianna. Dino will also be sorely missed by a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Dino was predeceased by his mother - Isabel (Bita); his grandparents - Juan and Guillermina, his cousin Damaris, his aunts Juana and Carmen and his uncles Jose and Daniel.
