Virginia Brooms

Virginia A. Brooms affectionately known to her family and friends as "Agnes", daughter of the late Evelyn James and Charles Brooms was born on July 30, 1926 in Canal Zone, Panama. She was called to her heavenly rest on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Agnes was educated in Panama City, Panama, but raised in San Miguel, Panama. She went to work in San Juan. Puerto Rico for a year and then returned to Panama. Agnes migrated from Panama to the United States in 1973. She settled in Brooklyn, New York with her daughter, until she got her apartment. She worked as a home attendant for over 20 years, where her motto was, "It's not what you make, but how you spend it." And she did spend it. She made that check stretch. Once all her bills were paid, she loved buying things for her Coney Island apartment which she lived in for over 40 years. Agnes also enjoyed playing her Panamanian lottery for years. Whether it was someone's birthday, a dream or even a gravesite number; she had to see the number man every Saturday. Anyone who knew Agnes also knew she loved her little "taste". Agnes could spend hours sitting on her recliner watching TV, especially her soaps and Spanish novelas. She enjoyed companionship with her friends. Prudencia, Beverly and her sister Rosalyn. She gave her life to Our Lady of Solace Church where she was a parishioner there for many years. Although Agnes's illness made her appear frail, she possessed strength, perseverance and a lot of pride, even at 90 years old. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents are her two sisters: Veronica Brooms and Mary Brooms-Lewes (Rose); one brother, Leroy Brooms; her son, Clifford A. Phillips, and three nephews: Julian Marshall. Roberto Marshall and Edwin Brooms. She leaves to cherish precious memories, her daughter, Maria Henry; her son-in-law, Teophilus Henry; nine grandchildren: Emillio Phillips (Queta Branch), Enrique Phillips (Neyra). Carla Henry-Rambert (Warren), Daydre Williams, Louis Henry, Leyllani Phillips-Johnson (Caliph), Christopher Henry, Ramesh Phillips and Florentino Hawkins; ten great-grandchildren; Imani Rambert, India Rambert, Ian Henry, Juston Payne. Orion Williams, Emilio Phillips Jr., Emily Phillips, Edgar Phillips, Ana Phillips and Melanie Phillips; one sister, Martha Simms (Rosalyn); seven nieces: Amalia Hubbard, Hercilia Simms, Dalia Everin, Adilma Evering, Antonietta Drummonds, Elvia Drummonds and Mariela Brooms; five nephews: Octavio Simms, Ernesto Brooms, Ricardo Drummonds, Anthony Lewes (Tony) and Humberto Lewes; and a host of great nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Agnes was loved by all who met her. There was noting she would not do for her family and friends. With her passing, it reminds us to cherish and celebrate life. Though she will be missed, she will forever remain in our hearts.
