Mary McKinnon

Mary Q McKinnon was born in Clio, South Carolina on December 25, 1925. She wasthe middle child of Beatrice and James McColl. She had one older sister, the late Bessie Lee Collions and a younger brother James David known as J.D. also deceased. Mary and her siblings were raised by their loving Grandmother whom she loved dearly and called her Mom. As well as their loving uncle, the late Genie Brown, who she said was more like a father to her. Mary McKinnon was the last surviving elder member of her family. When Mary was a child she loved attending church wiht her sister Bessie and her brother J.D. She would often tell the story when she was baptized, she felt so good and started shouting, she couldn't wait to be grace with his presence of meeting Jesus. Mary attended school in Marlboro, South Carolina. She spoke about her Professor Anderson, who wanted his students to learn so he would strike your hand with a wooden ruler, if you spelled a word incorrectly. Mary left South Carolina in 1942. At the age of 17 to move to New York to live with her Aunt Ruth so she could find work to send money back home to help her grandmother in 1946. Mary married her first love, a young man she met when she was fifteen years old at the Mellon Picnic in Clio South Carolina. Private first class Daniel W. McKinnon was in the Army, always would write to May Q professing his love and promises of marriage. Mary gave birth to her first child a daughter named after her husband's mother Hester Mckinnon. She then had her second child a son named after his father Daniel W. McKinnon Jr. and third child Gerand McKinnon. 1n 1953 she moved to Coney Island with Daniel in Gravesend projects. They had three more children, Gloria, Christine and her baby Helen who loved and cared for her until death. Mary departed this life on July 21, 2015 at 1:00 pm after a brief illness, a faithful servant of God, a loving mother and caring grandmother. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Mary survived by five children: Hester, Gerand, Gloria, Christine, and Helen; two sons in law Norman and Jimmy; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
