Martin Lastra

Mr. Martin Lastra Sr. known as "Papi" to everyone was born in the town of Maunaba, Puerto Rico to the late Rufino Lastra Sr, and Victoria Rodriguez-Lastra on March 18, 1922. Papi lived a good and blessed filled life until the age of 95. Papi was called to rest Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 5:45 pm at Mount Sinai Hospital. Papi completed his education in Puerto Rico, Papi was a jack of all trades. He was a carpenter, cement mason, welder, sheet metal fabricator and also a mechanic. Papi loved the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a dedicated NY Mets fan. He loved to take his chances at the casinos and his scratch off tickets. He was the king at playing dominoes. Anyone who knew Papi will never forget his wonderful sense of humor. He really knew how to make you laugh and put a smile on your face. Papi met our mother, the late Mother Milagros Jimenez-Lastra in Puerto Rico. They got married in 1949. From this marriage seven beautiful children were born. He leaves behind Michael Lastra of California, Minerva Lastra of Brooklyn NY, Rufino Lastra Sr. (deceased), Roberto Lastra of Manhattan NY, Martin Lastra Jr. of Queens, Maritza Lastra-Dozier of Queens NY, and Raymond Lastra of Brooklyn NY. They will all cherish his loving memories. He was a devoted, caring father and husband. He also leaves behind his dear friend and sister-in-law, Barbara Wallace. Papi cherished his in laws: Valerie Cooke-Lastra, Hector Roman Sr., Jaqualine Vasquez, Vivian Lynch, Phyllis Mitchell, Cedric Dozier and Angelina Larrymore. His 10 grandchildren will miss him dearly, They are Michael II, Dare, Noel and Malcom of California; Yzelette of Florida, Rufino Jr. and wife Jennifer of Idaho; Hector Roman Jr. and wife Chanelle of Middletown NY; Erica Roman and husband Oladipo of Brooklyn, NY; Jasmine Lastra of Philadelphia and Nyah Lastra of Brooklyn, NY. His 11 great-grandchildren are Tijay and Sameeha of California; Anthony, Andy and Alex of Florida; Taliyah and Taylor of Brooklyn NY; Briannah and Madison of Middletown NY; Marianna of Idaho and Amir of Philadelphia. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him. Last but not least we can't forget his grand pets that kept him busy, Diva and Mistee. We would like to thank Papi's home care aides, Jennifer Ruiz who attended to him for 10 years and Nickeshia Singh who attended to him for 1 year. We are forever grateful for the dedication and love you showed our father. A Message from Papi to family and friends: I have not left you. I am simply enjoying the next stage of my life. So please don't cry. Rejoice in the fact that I am happy. Remember that I will always love you. And smile because one day we shall meet again.
