Lee Oscar Taylor Sr.

Lee Oscar Taylor Sr., son of Junas Taylor and Ophelia Whitfield (nee) was born June 16, 1925 in Kinston, NC. He was the third born of four children. At a young age, his parents separated and his father sent him and his older brother, Robert Junas Taylor, to live with his relatives. Lee and his brother eventually moved to Baltimore, MD, where he was raised by his uncle James and aunt Mary Taylor. As Lee approached adolescence, he moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he became a student of the Brooklyn Public School System, and where he met his then childhood friend Genevieve Daniels. As a young adult, Lee enlisted in the United States Army. He received a Purple Heart for his honorable service in World War II. After his honorable discharge, Lee and Genevieve entered into holy matrimony on June 20, 1948. One of his earliest jobs was as a mechanic in New Jersey. Lee later became an employee of the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA), working as a railroad clerk, a tower operator, a conductor, and finally a motorman until retirement. In addition to being a loving husband, father and productive member of society, Lee was a member of New Brown memorial Baptist Church located in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. This membership is depicted in Oprah’s book club titled, “The Color of Water” by James McBride. Lee served faithfully as an Usher and Deacon at Coney Island Gospel Assembly located in Brooklyn, NY, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Queens, NY, and later Naomi AME Zion Church in Brooklyn, NY, under the leadership of Pastor James Smalls. Lee and Genevieve his wife of 64 years had seven children together. Lee is preceded in death by his beloved wife Genevieve and his 2 children Enid and Rodney Taylor. He is survived by five children, Patricia Jackman, Deborah Taylor, Russell Taylor, Lee Taylor Jr., and Valerie Ambrister and his niece Shirley Daniels. He also leaves two sons-in-law and four daughters-in-law, Raymond Jackman, Donald Ambrister Sr., Charlotte Taylor, Denise Taylor, Deborah Taylor and Teresa Taylor. In addition, Lee leaves behind one grandnephew, one great-grandnephew, one great-grandniece, 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Lee peacefully departed life on October 5, 2016 at Four Seasons Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn, NY, surrounded by his loved ones. He will be greatly missed.
